Both technologies promise "one screen in the cab and no cable hassle", but they solve different problems and differ in price by a factor of two or three. This article puts them side by side.
What is ISOBUS?
ISOBUS (ISO 11783) is the communication standard between tractor and implement. An ISOBUS sprayer plugs into the tractor's ISOBUS terminal (the John Deere, Fendt or New Holland display, or a stand-alone terminal from Trimble or Topcon); the sprayer's own ECU appears as a menu on that screen. Section control and variable rate run through the Task Controller.
Its strength: one screen, every brand. Whatever ISOBUS tractor you hitch the sprayer to, the same interface appears.
Its weakness: you need a tractor with an ISOBUS socket and terminal licence (generally mid-to-upper range from 2015 onwards), the sprayer must have an ISOBUS ECU (retrofitting is expensive), and section control through the Task Controller is a separately licensed feature on most brands. Altogether the sprayer-side investment is two to three times that of a standard GPS kit.
What is a wireless ECU (AIR ECU)?
The AIR ECU is an interface introduced with Tim's 2026 catalog: a sealed box mounted on the sprayer next to the valves. The valve harness plugs into it; communication with the control box or Nova computer in the cab is wireless. On the tractor side no ISOBUS infrastructure is needed; 12 V is enough.
Its strength: older tractors, rented tractors, a sprayer that moves between two tractors. No thick valve cable through the cab, nothing to unplug. Aqua control boxes (Aqua 500 AIR, Aqua 700 AIR), Hydra hydraulic boxes (Hydra 500 AIR) and the Nova 2N kits all run on the same ECU; one box carries both section control and boom hydraulics.
Its weakness: it does not integrate into the tractor's factory display; Tim's own screen or switch box sits in the cab.

Which one, when?
ISOBUS makes sense if:
- your whole fleet consists of new tractors with ISOBUS terminals,
- you want to run the seeder, spreader and sprayer from the same terminal,
- the sprayer already left the factory with ISOBUS.
AIR ECU makes sense if:
- your tractor is not ISOBUS or you run a mixed fleet (the large majority of farms),
- the sprayer moves between tractors during the season,
- you want to digitise an existing mechanical sprayer at a reasonable cost,
- you want boom hydraulics on the same box.
And GPS section control?
Both have it. On ISOBUS, section control comes with the Task Controller licence of the tractor terminal. On the AIR ECU side it is the Nova 2N Field 500 or Field 700 kit: the Nova 2N navigation computer, the Aqua box and the AIR ECU delivered together; sections close automatically from the map and the rate is held constant. Cross 200 gives enough accuracy; those who want RTK choose Cross 300.
